Why did the TMO check that?

The TMO only reviews specific categories of decision, mainly tries, foul play, and certain safety-related incidents, not every passage of play. If the referee or an assistant flags something in one of those categories, play stops while the TMO reviews available footage and advises the referee, who then makes the final call.
